SOA Governance presentation by Gijsbert in ’t Veld
On April 7 Gijsbert in ’t Veld, Principal Consultant at motion10, held a presentation on SOA Governance: “Governance in a Microsoft Landscape.” Various SOA and Microsoft BizTalk experts as well as customers and partners of Microsoft Nederland attended the presentation. We would like to share his views with you.
In Gijsbert’s view, the key benefit of SOA Governance is that it enables businesses to ensure the quality of their business processes and related services, and generate additional value for the enterprise. The implementation of some form of SOA Governance is therefore strongly recommended for any organization with a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). With Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, Microsoft BizTalk Server and the Microsoft Operations Framework, amongst others, Microsoft offers a comprehensive set of tools and methods to realize just that for the entire SOA life cycle, ranging from drafting to roll-out to administration.
One of the main challenges facing organizations is the increase in outsourcing of their various internal IT services, varying from application development to end-to-end infrastructure administration. Outsourcing this type of services will inevitably reveal issues which should be controlled using governance, including information exchange, audits of different but inter-linked processes, and security aspects. SOA Governance can ensure that this type of outsourced services will be deployed and administered in a transparent and auditable manner.
The presentation was followed by a discussion in which one of the participants asked whether SOA Governance – using the same tools – can also be deployed in an environment that is not purely SOA-based. The answer is simple and clear: Yes, it can! The tools currently available, including those from Microsoft, provide the methods and processes to effectively and beneficially deploy governance in a generic IT environment as well. However, there is a clear need for a standardized approach to governance, both for SOA-based and non-SOA-based environments. As an expert in this field motion10 can offer its customers and partners significant added value in developing and implementing governance within their organizations.
